FAQ's

Traveling to Alphonse Island

Check-in luggage is strictly limited to 15 kg or 33 pounds per person, and 5 kg or 11 pounds carry-on luggage. Please adhere to the specified limits. It is not possible to load extra luggage beyond your limit; it would have to be repacked and left on Mahé until your return. There is a left luggage storage at the airport or you can arrange for your tour operator in Mahé to store excess luggage while you are on Alphonse Island. Limited luggage storage would be possible with prior arrangement at the IDC Hangar in Mahé. We suggest that you use lighter soft-shell luggage as well.
There is a conservation donation of USD 25 per day. This will be included on your confirmation invoice and is settled prior to arrival. This conservation donation is given to the Island Conservation Society for the preservation of nature in the Seychelles.
The Seychelles is typically hot and somewhat humid with the midday temperature hovering at 35 degrees celsius. Evenings are also invariably warm with the exception of May to September when there may be a strong, cooling breeze.
Due to its proximity to the equator, there is no real twilight in the Seychelles. The sun rises quickly at around 6:15 a.m. and sets with equal swiftness at about 6:30 p.m. This varies by only minutes throughout the year, giving nearly a full 12 hours of daylight for 365 days a year.
We have weekly flights between Mahé and Alphonse Island on Saturdays, with additional flights on Mondays and Thursdays from mid-November to mid-April. The flights on Saturdays depart from Mahé at 10h00 or at 14h00 should we have an additional flight, returning to Mahé at respectively 12h00 and 16h00. The Monday and Thursday flights depart Mahé at 08h00 and returns to Mahé at ± 15h00. During peak periods, an additional Wednesday flight might also be feasible. We book the inter-island flights for you at the same time as your reservation with us.
Should you need assistance with international flights or overnight accommodation elsewhere in Seychelles, our reservations team would be only too happy to assist. Please contact reservations2@alphonse-island.com for any assistance with other travel arrangements.

Facilities & services

There is a fully kitted fly shop at the fishing centre that can provide you with most of the tackle you will need for your trip. There is a full range of flies that are custom tied for Alphonse on the right hooks and with the correct material. There is a complimentary 9, 10 and 12 weight rod and reel service; however should a rod be broken there is a rod replacement fee of either USD 100 or USD 250, dependant on the brand. All tackle sales need to be settled in cash at the shop.
Everything is informal on the island. Guests are encouraged to dress casually at all times and feel free to attend dinner in casual clothing.

Activities & experiences

Lightweight long sleeve shirts and long pants that can be zipped off are recommended. Sunscreen with a minimum protection factor of at least 30 SPF is required for any exposed skin areas. A buff and bandanna is of great importance for sun protection of your face. Sun gloves will help protect your hands.
The main fishing season runs from early October to the end of May.
We suggest that you book flexi international air tickets allowing for a free ticket change. It is not often that we have delays due to weather or ‘force majeure’, but this precaution allows you to change your ticket should adverse weather or ‘force majeure’ prevent you from travelling according to your schedule, in which event most insurance companies do not provide cover for related changes.

Health & safety

Although the roads between the accommodation and hotel are lit, it’s wise to have a headlamp for when you are riding your bike at night.
All guests are required to obtain “From Scene of Accident Medevac Insurance”. Details will be requested prior to arrival on the island. Alphonse Island and agents cannot assume any financial responsibility for consequences incurred if this has not been obtained.
All guests are required to obtain travel insurance that will cover any costs incurred due to flight delays for any reason.
All guests are required to sign an indemnity form once on location.
No inoculations are legally required for entry. However, you may want to check with your local immunization and inoculation clinic for their recommendations on health precautions for travel to the Seychelles. Some travellers elect to protect themselves against hepatitis A with an immunoglobulin injection (short-term protection) or the longer lasting vaccine. Other inoculations may be required if you are planning a trip extension to parts of Africa.
There is a desalination plant on Alphonse, and water from the faucet is safe to drink. We do not stock mineral water and will only supply it when specifically requested prior to arrival.
