My Experience on Alphonse Island

Experienced Crew, Top Equipment and Purpose-built Boats

We are proud of the most experienced recreational angling team in the Seychelles, with more years fishing on the outer islands than any other organisation. Alphonse has 8 full time fly fishing guides that are all professionals and have a very comprehensive knowledge of the areas in which they operate. They are all fluent in English and some speak French and Creole. Guiding takes place on a rotational basis allowing anglers to experience all the different characters within the guide team.

Anglers will fish in pairs sharing a skiff and guide each day. All the guides carry waterproof VHF radios and are in constant communication with each other as well as the base on Alphonse. They are all qualified skippers and their boat handling skills are impeccable. What makes the Alphonse guide team stand out from the rest is that they pioneered the techniques which have allowed fly anglers to target Milkfish on fly. Alphonse also accounts for more than 90% of the world’s Milkfish caught and released on an annual basis.

We also have a comprehensive list of suggested equipment, clothing and accessories to bring with you to Alphonse. There is a fully kitted fly shop at the fishing center that can provide you with most of the tackle you will need for your trip. There is a full range of flies that are custom tied for Alphonse on the right hooks and with the correct material. There is also a 9, 10 and 12 weight complimentary fly rod service.

Alphonse Island Lodge is an intimate, secluded lodge situated on Alphonse Island, the largest in the Alphonse group of atolls. This group of atolls is considered one of the most pristine, untouched Eden’s of the world, making it a nature lover’s paradise.

We are committed to protecting the unique fauna and flora of the area with ongoing research, rehabilitation and monitoring programs, focusing especially on nesting sea turtles, giant tortoises, sensitive marine habitats and forest rehabilitation. Fishing is done on a strict catch-and-release basis, with environmental fishing practices consistently practiced. The St. François fishery caters for just 12 fly anglers at a time to maintain exclusivity and sustainability. Many of the guides also hold qualifications in the field of ecology, and therefore conservation best practices are always applied along with our catch-and-release policy.

A Unique Location

Alphonse Island is an incredibly remote and secluded paradise to enjoy your fishing holiday! There is no malaria in the Seychelles and no vaccines are required when visiting, although some travellers elect to protect themselves against hepatitis A with an immunoglobulin injection (short-­term protection) or the longer lasting vaccine. Alphonse Island has no cyclones and is considered sheltered from extreme weather with predictable weather conditions, no poisonous snakes or spiders, no dangerous animals and no cars.

With only one intimate lodge on the entire atoll, you will experience a great sense of space, both indoors and out, with ocean views from your patio or deck and unblemished beaches just a few paces away.
